At the Vienna Royal Theatre, Dr. Friedrich Hohner (Boris Karloff), the house physician, has already killed his mistress, the company's star soprano. Ten years on, a young singer named Angela Klatt (Susanna Foster) reminds him of her, and George Waggner follows his old obsession as it starts to turn on the new voice. He wants that voice for himself alone, and the film is about what a man will do to keep a singer from singing for anyone else.
