A boy in 18th-century Armenia turns the pages of his books, and the poet Sayat-Nova's life begins to unfold in the pages and poems around him. Sergei Parajanov follows him from childhood through the monastery to old age, with Sofiko Chiaureli playing the poet as a young man and his muse. Parajanov mostly leaves the camera still and builds each scene like a tableau, with the actors posed inside the frame.
