The Color Purple

(1985)Directed by Steven Spielberg154 min · PG-13Drama
“It's about life. It's about love. It's about us.”

Celie (Whoopi Goldberg) is handed by her father to a man everyone calls Mister, Albert (Danny Glover), who treats her as one more hand to work his house in the South. Steven Spielberg follows her across forty years, with Shug Avery (Margaret Avery) and Sofia (Oprah Winfrey) entering her life as the people who finally see her. Underneath it all is a woman holding on to her dream of reaching her sister in Africa, and the belief that her own life is worth keeping.
