Willy Wolters (Christanne de Bruijn) came to America as a child with her Dutch parents, and in 1926 she is twenty-four and wants one thing, to stand in front of an orchestra and conduct it. Nobody around her takes the ambition seriously, and she will end up with a different name, Antonia Brico. Maria Peters films the story in the plain, steady manner of a period biography, keeping the camera close on Willy's face.
