The Convent

An American professor arrives at a Portuguese convent convinced that its archive holds proof Shakespeare was born in Spain, not England. Michael Padovic (John Malkovich) has come for the documents, but the caretaker Baltar (Luís Miguel Cintra) and the strangers around the place answer his questions with riddles. Manoel de Oliveira keeps Michael's wife Hélène (Catherine Deneuve) at his side, and she watches the search take hold of him.
