Duke (Rony Clanton) is fifteen and belongs to the Royal Pythons, a Harlem gang, and he wants a gun badly enough to deal with Priest (Carl Lee), an adult racketeer. With one he thinks he can become president of the gang and bring back the bopping, the street fighting that has died down. Shirley Clarke follows him through the neighborhood, and what pulls hardest is the uneasy bargain between a boy who wants to be feared and the older man willing to sell him the means.
