A winning player at the Las Vegas casino ends up beside Bernie Lootz (William H. Macy), and within minutes the dice stop falling right. Bernie is the house's cooler, a man whose bad luck rubs off on anyone near him, and his boss Shelly Kaplow (Alec Baldwin) likes the arrangement fine. Then Bernie falls for a waitress, Natalie (Maria Bello), and director Wayne Kramer sets that happiness against the one thing keeping him employed.
