In a Welsh mining town, a schoolteacher reads an essay by one of her pupils, Morgan Evans (John Dall), and finds rough poetry in it that she cannot put down. Miss Moffat (Bette Davis) opens classes in her own house and decides the boy is clever enough to sit the entrance exam for Oxford. Irving Rapper lets her push against a town that expects its boys in the pit, and against the pit itself, where Morgan's future is at stake.
