The Couch Trip

(1988)Directed by Michael Ritchie97 min · RComedy
“A comedy of truly loony proportions.”

John W. Burns, Jr. (Dan Aykroyd) walks out of a Chicago mental facility by posing as his own doctor, then lands in Beverly Hills with a radio show to host and someone else's name to keep straight. Michael Ritchie lets Burns, with Donald Becker (Walter Matthau) beside him, hand out advice to callers in a manner no actual psychiatrist would try. The joke underneath is plain enough: the people paid to fix everyone are no saner than the patients.
