The Count of Monte Cristo

(1954)Directed by Robert Vernay183 minAdventure, Drama, Romance

The film is set in France in the years after Napoleon's fall, when the young sailor Edmond Dantès (Jean Marais) is wrongfully thrown into prison and loses everything, Mercédès Herrera (Lia Amanda) included. He escapes, finds a treasure, and comes back as the wealthy Count of Monte Cristo, a stranger to the men who betrayed him. Robert Vernay adapts the Dumas novel of 1844 as a long, plainly told costume adventure.
