Ethel Whitehead (Joan Crawford) is done with her small-town marriage and wants out, and she wants the big time on the other side of it. The way up runs through the mob, and Vincent Sherman follows her into the orbit of the crime boss George Castleman (David Brian) and his men, among them Nick Prenta (Steve Cochran). Ethel takes every step on purpose, and the film keeps asking what each one will cost her.
