Copenhagen in the 1920s, and two painters share a studio and a marriage. When Gerda (Alicia Vikander) asks her husband Einar to stand in for a missing portrait model, he puts on the stockings and the dress, and a sense of who he is meant to be begins to surface. Tom Hooper films their home in soft, muted light and keeps the camera close enough to catch every small change in Einar's face (Eddie Redmayne).
