“Welcome to a world without rules.”

Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) is in the middle of his war on Gotham's crime families, working with Lt. Jim Gordon and the new district attorney, Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart). It is working, until a criminal known as the Joker (Heath Ledger) starts testing how far the city, and Batman, will bend. Christopher Nolan gives him a smeared grin and a pencil, and the city's frightened citizens learn his name.
