Each morning in 1915 France, the 39th Squadron sends young pilots up in bullet-riddled crates, and each evening fewer of them come back. Major Brand (Basil Rathbone) commands them and cannot make headquarters listen, while the insubordinate Captain Courtney (Errol Flynn) keeps pushing against him. Edmund Goulding shows men who keep a stiff upper lip because the work leaves them nothing else to hold.
