Nobody knows his name, only that he is called the Jackal, and French generals furious over de Gaulle's policies have hired him to kill the president in the summer of 1963. Fred Zinnemann tracks the Jackal (Edward Fox) as he works his way through the preparations, while Inspector Thomas (Tony Britton) and the French police try to find out who he is. Fox plays him courteous and unhurried, a man who treats the killing of a president as a job to be done properly.
