A Foreign Office official is dead, and the verdict is suicide, but the details of the death do not sit right. Charles Dobbs (James Mason), a British agent, goes to see the man's widow, Elsa Fennan (Simone Signoret), while his superiors tell him to leave it alone. Sidney Lumet puts Dobbs on this case quietly, with a retired inspector for help and a wife at home who keeps leaving him.
