Ciappelletto (Franco Citti) is a scoundrel who talks a priest through his own deathbed confession and lies his way to a saint's reputation. Pier Paolo Pasolini builds the film from Boccaccio's tales, among them a young Sicilian swindled twice, a man posing as a deaf-mute among curious nuns, and a wife hiding her lover when her husband comes home early. Ninetto Davoli's Andreuccio of Perugia stumbles from one cheat into the next, always certain he is a step ahead.
