A three-year-old boy vanishes from a hotel lobby while his mother, Beth (Michelle Pfeiffer), checks in for her high school reunion. Nine years later the family has moved to a new town, and her husband Pat (Treat Williams) and their remaining children are still living around the gap he left. Ulu Grosbard, working from Jacquelyn Mitchard's novel, keeps the camera close on the family's faces and lets the silence in each room carry the missing child.
