The Detective

“An adult look at a police detective.”

New York City in 1968, and the body of Teddy Leikman, the gay son of a politically connected department store owner, turns up in a case the department would rather close quickly. Det. Sgt. Joe Leland (Frank Sinatra) works it anyway, and Gordon Douglas follows him from one grim interview to the next. Joe has a marriage to Karen (Lee Remick) that is already strained, and the deeper he digs, the less of himself he has left for her.
