Jakub (Leszek Teleszyński) is a young Polish nobleman who should be sitting in a prison cell, until a stranger (Wojciech Pszoniak) gets him out. The price is a list of the men Jakub conspired with, and Jakub follows his rescuer across the country, deeper into a landscape of chaos and rot. Żuławski keeps the film banned for years in Poland, and what the road does to Jakub is the whole story: the man who is freed does not stay sane.
