“A new high in being lowdown.”

Max Devlin (Elliott Gould), a Los Angeles landlord, is killed in an accident and lands in Hell, where the Devil, Barney Satin (Bill Cosby), offers him a way back. He has two months to talk three innocent young people into signing away their souls, and he returns to Earth with a few special powers. Seven-year-old Toby (Adam Rich) complicates the job by insisting Max marry his mother, Penny (Susan Anspach).
