Dr. Julian Blair (Boris Karloff) is a scientist who cannot stop trying to reach his dead wife, and he turns his research toward the one thing no laboratory has measured. Edward Dmytryk puts him in the company of Mrs. Walters (Anne Revere), a medium who offers him a way in. Anne Blair (Amanda Duff) watches her father drift from her as the work takes the place of everything else.
