Simon Aron (Patrick Mower) has stopped answering his friends and keeps company with Mocata (Charles Gray), a courteous, soft-spoken stranger. The Duc de Richleau (Christopher Lee) and Rex Van Ryn (Leon Greene) can see it, and they go after him in the dark, drawn into the occult as one night closes in. Terence Fisher keeps them in one place with the Duc, who has to stay steady and cannot step outside the circle he has drawn.
