The Devils

(1971)Directed by Ken Russell112 min · NC-17Drama, History, Horror
“Hell will hold no surprises for them...”

Father Urbain Grandier (Oliver Reed) is a handsome, proud priest in 1634 Loudun, admired by the town and entangled with more than one of its women. Sister Jeanne des Anges (Vanessa Redgrave), the hunchbacked prioress of the local convent, fixates on him, and her accusations of witchcraft reach officials of church and state who are glad to use them. Ken Russell stages it with lurid excess, packing the frame with sets, costume and flesh.
