Greg meets Tommy (James Franco), an enigmatic actor with an unshakable belief in his own genius, in a San Francisco acting class. The two form an unlikely friendship and move to Los Angeles together, where Tommy decides to make a feature film. Greg watches as Tommy pours his savings into The Room, a melodrama that becomes stranger with each scene, and realizes his friend's dream might destroy everything they've built.
