(1928)Directed by Josef von Sternberg76 minDrama, Romance

Someone has gone into the water off the New York waterfront, and a stoker named Bill Roberts (George Bancroft) hauls her out. She is Mae (Betty Compson), and the rescue changes the course of his night ashore. Josef von Sternberg follows the two of them through a silent 1928 world of dockside saloons, with Bill's coal-blackened hands still gripping her wet coat.
