Jack McKee (William Hurt) is a surgeon who has money, status and a steady, easy way of talking to patients that never goes past the surface. Then a throat cancer diagnosis puts him on the other side of the examining table, waiting in the same hospital corridors where he used to hurry past. Randa Haines follows him through the long waits and the clipped, careless bedside manner of his own colleagues, and Jack finds he can no longer keep the distance he built.
