The Doll

(1919)Directed by Ernst Lubitsch66 minComedy, Fantasy, Romance

In a German fairy-tale village of painted sets, the dollmaker Hilarius (Victor Janson) sells lifelike mechanical dolls from his workshop. Lancelot (Hermann Thimig), a nervous young man who must marry to claim his uncle's fortune, buys one instead of taking a bride. Ernst Lubitsch builds the comedy on what a marriage is when one partner is a machine, and the other is hiding.
