The Duchess of Langeais

At a Spanish cloister, a celebrated general of the Napoleonic Wars hears a voice he knows from among the nuns. Armand de Montriveau (Guillaume Depardieu) remembers the woman who sang it, Antoinette de Langeais (Jeanne Balibar), a duchess in Paris who let him court her for years in the 1820s. Jacques Rivette follows her through the salons, a woman who wants to be pursued and cannot bear to be caught.
