In 1961, Kempton Bunton (Jim Broadbent), a 60-year-old taxi driver, walks out of the National Gallery in London with Goya's portrait of the Duke of Wellington. It is the first theft in the Gallery's history, and Roger Michell tells it from Kempton's cramped home, where the secret sits among the family. His wife Dorothy (Helen Mirren) has had enough of his schemes, and she is the one he has to answer to.
