Late in 1943, the Nazi high command learns that Winston Churchill will be staying at a country estate in Norfolk, and someone proposes taking him alive. Colonel Kurt Steiner (Michael Caine) leads the German paratroopers sent across the Channel, with the Irish operative Liam Devlin (Donald Sutherland) already waiting in England. John Sturges sets the two men against each other, one bound by orders, the other by his own cheerful scorn for them.
