The Elementary School

The class in a village outside Prague in 1945 is so unruly that their teacher quits. Igor Hnízdo (Jan Tříska) takes over, a strict, militant man who turns out to be fair, though he cannot stay away from young women. Jan Svěrák follows ten-year-old Eda (Václav Jakoubek) and his friend Tonda through that first postwar school year, where growing up means learning that the adults in charge are as flawed as the children.
