The Elephant Man

(1980)Directed by David Lynch124 min · PGDrama, History
A true story of courage and human dignity.

Frederick Treves (Anthony Hopkins), a London surgeon, wants to understand the intelligence trapped inside a grotesquely deformed body known as the Elephant Man. He brings John Merrick (John Hurt) from a freak show into the hospital, where Merrick speaks with quiet eloquence and hunger for human kindness. Lynch shoots the hospital in black and white, finding beauty in shadow and silence, so that every moment of connection becomes an act of grace.
