The Elusive Corporal

(1962)Directed by Jean Renoir105 minComedy, Drama, War

A young corporal from a good family is taken prisoner during the German invasion of France in 1940, and from that first day he is determined to get out. His fellow prisoners include Papa (Claude Brasseur), a working-class Parisian, along with a waiter and a dairy farmer, and each attempt at escape sends him somewhere new. Jean Renoir, past seventy, films all of it with a loose, easy humor, as if the war were a long walk.
