In 1936, Dr. Lawrence "Brad" Bradford (William Powell) is a physician whose divorce has not cost him his ex-wife's attention, since Paula (Jean Arthur) writes mystery novels and keeps pulling him into other people's trouble. Their case leads to a racetrack, where the bookies and jockeys all have secrets. Stephen Roberts lets the two bicker through the investigation, and the case matters less than the fact that they still can't leave each other alone.
