The Extraordinary Adventures of Mr. West in the Land of the Bolsheviks

(1924)Directed by Lev Kuleshov77 minComedy

Mr. West (Porfiri Podobed) comes to Soviet Russia sure of what he will find there, and then his luggage is stolen and he loses his bodyguard, the cowboy Jeddy (Boris Barnet). Lev Kuleshov, who drew on American films he found livelier than Russian ones, stages the chase with gags borrowed from that example. Underneath the slapstick sits an argument that a film's meaning is built by how its shots are joined.
