Sammy Fabelman (Gabriel LaBelle) is a boy in 1950s California who discovers a camera and begins filming everything around him. His mother Mitzi (Michelle Williams) is restless and mercurial; his father Burt (Paul Dano) is steady and bewildered; their marriage contains fractures that Sammy senses and documents. Spielberg traces how a kid with a camera learns to see, turning family wreckage into images he can control.
