The Face of Another

“It’s always lonely being free.”

Mr. Okuyama (Tatsuya Nakadai), an engineer, is burned in an industrial accident and left with his whole face wrapped in bandages. His doctor, Dr. Hori (Mikijiro Hira), offers him a lifelike mask, and Okuyama puts it on to see whether anyone, his wife (Machiko Kyō) included, can tell. Hiroshi Teshigahara frames Nakadai alone with the mask, the bandages gone, and the face turned toward the mirror.
