Kit McKittrick (John Garfield) comes home to New York after prison in the Spanish Civil War, freed because a policeman pulled some strings. Then he hears that a friend has died, and the suicide doesn't sit right with him. He starts asking questions of three women, one with a tie to his refugee past, while Nazi operatives keep pace behind him. Richard Wallace directs this wartime spy picture, scored well enough to earn an Oscar nomination.
