Katrin Holstrom (Loretta Young) leaves her family's farm for the city to study nursing, and ends up working as a maid in the house of Congressman Glenn Morley (Joseph Cotten) and his formidable mother, Agatha (Ethel Barrymore). H.C. Potter keeps the household bright and brisk, and Katrin's plain farm manners turn out to carry real weight there. She and Glenn start as employee and employer, and the way they look at each other soon stops fitting those roles.
