The Fascist

(1961)Directed by Luciano Salce100 minComedy, War

Italy in 1944, and the regime is days from collapse, though Federale Primo Arcovazzi (Ugo Tognazzi) hasn't noticed. A devoted and not very bright Fascist militiaman, he takes on the job of escorting Professor Erminio Bonafé (Georges Wilson), a known opponent of the regime, to Rome, hoping for a promotion. Luciano Salce sets the trip against a country coming apart, where a man's loyalty to a cause that is already finished makes for a quiet sort of tragedy.
