“Jammed With Action ! . . Loaded With Excitement ! . . . And Every Thrill-Packed Word Is True !”

New York's 69th Infantry Regiment ships out for the First World War, an Irish-American outfit with a Civil War nickname to live up to. Among the new men is Jerry Plunkett (James Cagney), a loudmouthed braggart who has already turned his comrades and officers against him. William Keighley fills the barracks with Father Duffy (Pat O'Brien) and Wild Bill Donovan (George Brent), but Duffy is the one who keeps faith in Plunkett.
