Thelma Jordon (Barbara Stanwyck) walks into the district attorney's office to report a prowler, and the assistant D.A. on duty, Cleve Marshall (Wendell Corey), is the one who takes her statement. Robert Siodmak follows Cleve's pull toward her, and then the murder of her wealthy aunt, which puts Thelma under suspicion and Cleve in the position of trying to clear her. He is married, he is a prosecutor, and he keeps choosing her anyway.
