“Power can be murder to resist.”

Mitch McDeere (Tom Cruise) is a young lawyer about to sit his Bar exam, and he wants a life with money in it. A firm makes him an offer he can't refuse, then showers him with gifts, until two associates turn up dead and the FBI comes asking. Sydney Pollack builds the story around what comfort costs a man who never looked at where it came from.
