“He's searching for a killer. She's searching for a miracle .... And time is running out.”

Sergeant Edward Delaney (Frank Sinatra) is a New York detective close to retirement, and all he wants is to put one last case together before he goes. A killer is working through the city, and Delaney keeps asking whether the victims are linked and what the brutal method is meant to say. Brian G. Hutton follows him through the investigation while his wife Barbara (Faye Dunaway) lies in a hospital bed, and the work leaves him no room for her.
