R.J. Mitchell (Leslie Howard) is an aircraft designer who sets out to build a streamlined monoplane fast enough to outrun anything else in the sky. He works beside his test pilot Geoffrey Crisp (David Niven), with Diana Mitchell (Rosamund John) at his side. Howard, who also directed, tells it as the story of one man's labor, and the film keeps asking what a person gives up to finish the work he was made for.
