Jeffrey Willis (Matt Dillon) is a Brooklyn teenager who takes a summer job at the Flamingo Club, a private beach club on Long Island, and finds he likes it a lot more than home. Phil Brody (Richard Crenna), a smooth-talking car salesman, takes him under his wing, and Jeffrey starts pulling away from his father, Arthur (Héctor Elizondo). Garry Marshall sets the choice up as college and a modest life against easy money and the club, with the summer running out.
