How does a man get by on talk alone? Mordecai Jones (George C. Scott) does it across the rural South, calling himself a Master of Back-Stabbing, Cork-Screwing and Double-Dealing, and he takes on Curley (Michael Sarrazin), an Army deserter, as his pupil. Irvin Kershner follows them down the back roads. Scott sits at the front of the car in his battered hat, talking without a pause, while Curley watches him from the passenger seat.
