The Flowers of St. Francis

(1950)Directed by Roberto Rossellini87 minDrama, History
“A Movie for Today... And All Time”

Why would a film about a medieval saint hire real monks from the Nocera Inferiore Monastery to play his followers? Roberto Rossellini and Federico Fellini build it from small, separate stories, among them Fra' Ginepro (Severino Pisacane) and the tyrant Nicolaio (Aldo Fabrizi). The images are composed to look like paintings from Saint Francis's own time, and every episode comes back to humility, compassion, faith and sacrifice.
