The Flowers of War
“Fighting for freedom.”
Why would a Westerner in Nanking in 1937 put on a priest's robes? John Miller (Christian Bale) takes shelter in a church compound where the women have gathered as the Japanese army moves through the city, and he claims a role that is not his. Zhang Yimou follows him and Yu Mo (Ni Ni), and what the film makes plain is that in a war, a person's life can depend on what others will believe about them.
